The famous Kaleidoscope dial "Cocktail" watch is beautiful and interesting . The following ladies example dates to early 1970s and was made by none other than the Ernest Borel Watch Company, a respected firm founded in 1859 and located in Neuchatel, Switzerland. The Borel kaleidoscope dial watch is prominently featured in Faber and Unger's "American Wristwatches: Five Decades of Style and Design" on page 245 where it states that this watch was first introduced in the late 1940s. About no other watch can I say "to see it in action is to appreciate it" for its two revolving gold and (rare) Blue center dials are in constant motion, creating the effect of a flower blossom opening and closing...incredible. What's even nicer is that this model has little silver "balls" that rotate above this, creating an even more unique look This quadruple-signed timepiece measures 33mm lug tip to lug tip and 25mm in width (27mm with original signed crown). In inches this works out to be just over 1-1/4" long by 1" wide, not counting the winding crown. It has been fully serviced, cleaned, oiled and timed Its original 17 jewel, Ernest Borel signed Swiss mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The dial on this watch is quite unique both because of the little tiny balls that rotate around above the kaleidoscope dial but also because of its color black. The watches came in Red, Black and Green . This dial is all original and in excellent condition, featuring a gold 60 minute and inlaid enamel marker 12 hour dial, RED metal hour and minute hands that rotate around the outer edge and the famous Kaleidoscope center! Signed ERNEST BOREL below the 12 and Modele Depose COCKTAIL Swiss Made at the base. The 100% original acrylic crystal is in excellent condition, complete with little circular notches to play off the rotating crystal "balls" below. The case is 14kt Yellow Gold Electroplated (to 20 microns) I particularly like the curved "T Lugs" of this model. The original winding crown is signed with the more modern Ernest Borel trademark and is in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly. Turning the watch over you can view the movement ticking away. The original crystal covering the mechanism is in excellent condition, as is the 14kt gold electroplated bezel. The movement is signed SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS ERNEST BOREL, SWISS . The caliber is ETA 2660, as stamped below the balance. This original Cocktail watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes complete with a new 12mm black shell leather strap with gold finished buckle. This watch and band will fit a wrist 5-3/4 to 7 inches in size. All in all a fun to wear and a few second glances from admirers be prepared for some questions.
