50s NOS Corbeil Canadian Handmade Calfskin Mens Dress Shoes Sized: 11 D 12 1/4" x 4 1/4" Outside Measurements Corbeil & Sons was a shoemaking firm operating In Quebec City. They made handmade shoes, almost exclusively from calf, from the 1860s until they went out of business in the late 1970s. While little information remains about the firm, they were noted for the quality of their leathers, and wonderful handsewing of their shoes. These shoes are in absolute new condition, even though they are over 60 years old. The calfskin uppers are as soft and supple as when they were lasted. The hand welted soles, bend oak tanned leather, are pristine, as are the hand nailed heels. The style is destinctive. As you can see from the photographs, the raised, handsewn toe extends in a "swoosh" from the beginning of one quarter, around the toe box, to end at the beginning of the opposite quarter. We have never seen a style precisely like this before. The soles, while not a true spade, do have a spade look to them. The narrow waist extends to a widening before it narrows to a gentle point at the toe. Please look at the hand stitching of the soles. Look at the number of stitches per inch, and the "offset" stitching, ala those wonderful Cordwainers. This is a quality shoe in every respect. Corbeil is not as well known in Canada as Dacks and Hartt, but, then, Nettleton and Cordwainer were not as well known in the United States as Florsheim and Hanover either. These shoes are rare. We have owned literally hundreds of high quality vintage shoes, and this is the first pair of Corbeil that we have seen. These shoes come in their original Corbeil, LTD., box. Please examine the photographs closely, since they comprise part of this description. Please rely on the stated measurements for fit, rather than the stated size. With vintage shoes, stated size and reality can sometimes be very far apart. These shoes will be shipped USPS Priority Mail, with Delivery Confirmation.
